Carnival Cruise Line is one of the world's largest and most popular cruise lines, synonymous with its "Fun Ships" philosophy. Known for its vibrant, high-energy atmosphere and family-friendly amenities, Carnival offers an accessible and exciting holiday experience. The line emphasises great value and creating memorable moments for a wide audience.
A Brief History
Carnival Cruise Line was founded in 1972 by entrepreneur Ted Arison. Its first ship, the Mardi Gras, was a converted transatlantic liner that began sailing from Miami. A defining moment came in 1982 with the launch of the Tropicale, the line's first purpose-built ship which introduced the iconic winged funnel design.
The company grew rapidly, thanks in part to being the first cruise line to advertise on network TV. In 1987, Carnival went public, generating significant capital that fuelled its expansion and led to the formation of Carnival Corporation & plc in 1993. The company continued to innovate, launching the first passenger ship to exceed 100,000 gross tons, the Carnival Destiny, in 1996.
Today, Carnival remains a leader in the contemporary cruise market. It constantly introduces new ships and groundbreaking attractions, such as the first roller coaster at sea on its Excel-class vessels. This commitment to fun and innovation keeps the brand at the forefront of the industry.

Dining Options
Dining is a highlight of any Carnival cruise, with a huge variety of options to suit every palate, many of which are included in your fare. The main dining rooms offer a traditional cruise dining experience with a multi-course menu that changes daily. For a more casual meal, the Lido Marketplace buffet serves a vast array of international dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Beyond the main venues, Carnival is famous for its complimentary casual eateries. Grab a delicious, custom-made burger at Guy's Burger Joint, enjoy fresh tacos and burritos at BlueIguana Cantina, or get a slice of pizza any time of day at Pizzeria del Capitano. Many ships also feature a deli, Mongolian Wok, and Indian tandoor station.
For a special occasion or a more refined culinary experience, Carnival's specialty restaurants offer incredible food for an additional fee. Indulge in premium cuts of meat at the Steakhouse, enjoy authentic family-style Italian at Cucina del Capitano, or experience fresh seafood and sushi at Bonsai Sushi. On newer ships, you can also find venues like Rudi's Seagrill, Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken, and the interactive entertainment of Bonsai Teppanyaki.
Onboard Entertainment & Activities
Carnival's "Fun Ships" live up to their name with a non-stop schedule of entertainment and activities from morning until late at night. In the evenings, the main theatre comes alive with high-energy Playlist Productions shows, which transform popular songs into spectacular musical revues. For laughs, the Punchliner Comedy Club offers both family-friendly and adults-only stand-up shows.
Live music is a cornerstone of the Carnival experience, with rock bands in the pub, acoustic artists in the atrium, and DJs spinning tracks at the nightclub. Themed deck parties, like the Mega Deck Party, are a huge draw for guests of all ages. For those feeling lucky, the onboard casino offers a wide range of slot machines and table games.
During the day, the fun continues with activities like trivia contests, arts and crafts, and poolside games. The top decks feature the Carnival WaterWorks aqua park with thrilling slides and splash zones. For a more peaceful escape, the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat provides a quiet oasis with comfortable loungers, whirlpools, and a private bar.
Carnival Cruise Line for Solo Travellers
Carnival is a popular choice for solo travellers due to its social, high-energy atmosphere that makes it easy to meet new people. While the line doesn't offer as many dedicated single cabins as some competitors, its fun-focused environment ensures single cruisers never feel out of place. The sheer volume of activities provides plenty of opportunities to mingle.
Accommodation for Solo Cruisers
Carnival does not have a large inventory of solo cabins, and those that exist are typically small interior rooms. Most solo travellers will need to book a standard double-occupancy cabin and pay a single supplement, which can be up to 200% of the per-person fare. It's always worth looking for deals where this supplement might be reduced.
Meeting People and Onboard Life
The cruise director and entertainment staff host a variety of social events, including a singles' meet-and-greet early in the cruise. Participating in organised activities like trivia, deck games, or cooking demonstrations is a great way to connect with fellow passengers. The friendly atmosphere at venues like the RedFrog Pub or the Alchemy Bar also makes it easy to strike up a conversation.
Dress Code
The dress code on Carnival is generally relaxed and casual, reflecting the line's fun-focused philosophy. During the day, resort-style wear such as shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, and swimwear (with a cover-up for indoor areas) is perfectly acceptable. The main rule is that shoes and a shirt are required when entering the buffet and other indoor venues.
In the evenings, the dress code is "Cruise Casual." This means attire like smart trousers, jeans, polo shirts, and casual dresses are appropriate for the main dining rooms and other onboard venues. Items such as cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, T-shirts with offensive language, and baseball caps are not permitted in the main dining room for dinner.
On cruises of 6 nights or longer, there will be two "Cruise Elegant" nights. On these evenings, guests are encouraged to dress up, with suggested attire including suits, dinner jackets, cocktail dresses, and elegant skirts or trousers. While many guests enjoy getting dressed up, a tuxedo or ball gown is not required.
Gratuities / Tipping Policy
To recognise the hard work of the crew, Carnival automatically adds a daily gratuity to each guest's onboard Sail & Sign account. This amount is shared among the dining, cabin, and alternative services staff who work to make your cruise enjoyable. The specific daily rate can vary by cabin type, with suite guests typically paying a higher amount.
These automatic gratuities can be pre-paid before the cruise or charged daily to your onboard account. While the charge is automatic, guests who are not satisfied with the service they receive can visit the Guest Services desk to have the amount adjusted. A separate 18% service charge is also automatically added to all beverage purchases, specialty dining, and spa treatments.
Embarkation Day Beverage Policy
Carnival has a specific policy regarding beverages brought on board on embarkation day. Guests aged 21 and over are permitted to bring one sealed 750ml bottle of wine or champagne per person in their carry-on luggage. Bringing beer, spirits, or any other alcoholic beverages on board is strictly forbidden and they will be confiscated.
In addition to the wine or champagne, guests may also bring a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages. This is limited to a maximum of 12 sealed cans or cartons (no more than 12 ounces each) of drinks like soda, juice, or water per person. All beverages must be in carry-on luggage, as they are not permitted in checked bags.
What Guests Are Saying: A Balanced View
Guests consistently praise Carnival for its incredible value for money and lively, unpretentious atmosphere. Many cruisers, especially families and first-timers, love the sheer number of activities and the friendly, energetic crew. The quality and variety of the complimentary food, particularly at Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina, are frequently highlighted as major positives.
On the other hand, some experienced cruisers find the atmosphere can be noisy and crowded, especially on shorter sailings. A common criticism revolves around upselling for drinks, photos, and specialty dining, which can make some guests feel pressured. While the ships are generally well-maintained, some feedback points to signs of wear on the older vessels in the fleet.
Environmental & Sustainability Efforts
Carnival Corporation & plc is committed to reducing its environmental impact across its global fleet. A key part of this strategy is the introduction of ships powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), a much cleaner-burning fuel. The entire Excel-class of ships, including Mardi Gras, Celebration, and Jubilee, operate on LNG.
The company has also invested heavily in Advanced Air Quality Systems (scrubbers) on the majority of its ships to reduce emissions. In addition, Carnival is focused on waste reduction through comprehensive recycling programmes and the installation of food waste biodigesters. These efforts are part of a long-term goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

Required Travel Documents
Ensuring you have the correct travel documents is one of the most critical aspects of cruise preparation. For most itineraries, a valid passport is the standard requirement. For certain "closed-loop" cruises starting and ending in the same US port, US citizens may be able to travel with a government-issued birth certificate and photo ID, but a passport is always strongly recommended.
Crucially, you must adhere to the cruise line's specific rules, which can be stricter than the entry requirements of the countries you are visiting. A common example is passport validity; a destination country might only require your passport to be valid for three months upon entry, but the cruise line may enforce a strict six-month validity rule. If you don't meet the cruise line's standard, you will be denied boarding with no recourse for a refund.
Travelling with Minors (as a Non-Guardian)
If you are travelling with a child for whom you are not the parent or legal guardian, you must have proper documentation. Carnival requires a signed letter of consent from the child's non-travelling parent(s) or legal guardian(s). This letter should explicitly authorise you to take the child on the specific cruise and grant you permission to make medical decisions in an emergency.
It is highly recommended that this letter be notarised to avoid any potential issues with authorities at the cruise terminal or in foreign ports. Failing to produce this documentation can result in being denied boarding. Always check the specific requirements on Carnival's website well in advance of your travel date.
Onboard Safety & Permitted Items
For the safety and security of all guests and crew, Carnival strictly prohibits certain items from being brought on board. All luggage, both checked and carry-on, will be scanned at the terminal. Prohibited items include all weapons, illegal drugs, and items with heating elements like clothing irons, hot plates, or kettles (curling irons and hair straighteners are generally permitted).
You are also not allowed to bring drones, skateboards, or other personal mobility devices that are not for medical purposes. Any prohibited items found during security screening will be confiscated and will not be returned. It is essential to review the full list of prohibited items on Carnival's website before you pack.
Medications & Prohibited Substances Policy
Guests requiring medications should pack them in their carry-on luggage, along with a copy of their prescription. It is crucial that all prescription medications remain in their original pharmacy-labelled containers. This helps to avoid any confusion or issues with security or customs officials.
Carnival has a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding all illegal substances. The possession or use of any illegal drugs, including marijuana for medical purposes, is strictly forbidden on board their ships, regardless of local or state laws where the cruise embarks. Guests found in violation of this policy will be disembarked at their own expense and may face legal action.
Food Policy
Carnival's food policy addresses what guests can bring on board, take off the ship, and bring back from port.
Bringing Food Onboard
Guests are permitted to bring small quantities of pre-packaged, non-perishable food items in their carry-on luggage. Homemade items, or anything that requires refrigeration or cooking, are not allowed. This is ideal for those with specific dietary needs who may require certain snacks.
Taking Food Off the Ship
For environmental and agricultural reasons, you are not permitted to take fresh fruit, vegetables, or meat products off the ship in ports of call. You can, however, take pre-packaged, sealed items like a box of crackers or a granola bar ashore with you for a snack.
Bringing Food Back From Port
Bringing food back onto the ship from a port of call is generally restricted, especially fresh produce. However, sealed, pre-packaged, and shelf-stable items, such as a box of local sweets or a bag of coffee, are typically allowed. This is to prevent the introduction of pests and agricultural diseases.

Absolutely. Carnival is renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere, with dedicated kids' clubs (Camp Ocean), the Dr. Seuss at Sea programme, WaterWorks aqua parks, and a wide range of activities suitable for all ages.
A Word of Caution: Cruise Scams
When planning your voyage, it is essential to remain highly vigilant against potential scam attempts that target travellers. Be aware of these common red flags:
- "Free Cruise" or "Exclusive Offer" Traps: Be highly suspicious of any unsolicited calls, emails, or messages claiming you've won a free cruise or are eligible for an impossibly low-priced "exclusive" deal. These invariably come with hidden fees, demands for immediate payment for "port taxes," or are simply phishing attempts to collect your personal data. Many major cruise lines have had their names used in such fraudulent schemes.
- Fake Websites and Phishing Attempts: Scammers create convincing fake websites that mimic the cruise line's official site. Always manually type the official website address into your browser and double-check the URL very carefully before entering any payment or personal data.
- High-Pressure Sales Tactics: Be wary of any offer that demands an immediate decision due to a "limited-time offer" that is about to expire. This tactic is used by fraudsters to prevent you from doing proper research or verifying the offer's legitimacy.
- Unusual Payment Requests: Never agree to pay for a cruise via untraceable methods like wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Legitimate cruise lines and their authorised travel partners use secure, traceable payment methods like credit cards.
To ensure your journey with Carnival Cruise Line begins safely, always book directly through their official website for your region or through a well-established, reputable travel adviser. If an offer feels suspicious, contact Carnival Cruise Line directly using the official contact information found on their verified website, not from the suspicious communication itself. Booking through official channels ensures your voyage begins with complete peace of mind.
